Wanderer of the Wasteland edition by Zane Grey Children eBooks

Although Zane Grey wasn’t born in the west, he was one of the first authors to make it come alive for readers, beginning with Riders of the Purple Sage. Though panned by critics in his day for his overly vivid, often violent portrayals of the American West and its people, he was immensely popular with readers. His works still stand the test of time, and the way he tied the characters into the land, and the land into the story still serve as models for writers of many genres.
His Wanderer of the Wasteland, the story of a young man who, after killing his brother, flees to the desert to atone, and how he becomes one with the land, is quintessential Grey. Adam Larey was betrayed by his older brother, Guerd, a gambler and wastrel, so he ran away to a mining town. Guerd, in the company of a vicious and unscrupulous sheriff, tracked him down, and in a confrontation, Adam shot his brother and assaulted the sheriff. He then ran away to the desert, feeling that he must atone for the worst mortal sin, fratricide.
In the years that follow, Adam grows into a man, and becomes one with the desert. The land, in all its magnificence and malevolence, changes him, and he in turn changes everyone with whom he comes into contact.
In this story, the land is as much a part of the story as the characters, shaping their moods and actions, and often serving as the arbiter of their fate.
A classic western that will delight fans of the genre. This book was reissued in e-book format. I received a free copy.

Wanderer of the Wasteland edition by Zane Grey Children eBooks Reviews

I love Zane Grey's stories .. wanderer is a long story and gets bogged down at times .. his description of the desert is breath-taking ..
Adam, the hero is almost unbelievable .. Grey is a master of character development .. a great read ..
The poetical prose of Zane Grey carries a pattern quite unlike the work of contemporary writers. In the midst of the building of a plot and development of characters, we also find lyrical musings on the spiritual aspects of nature and the struggle to know God.
The ending is at once comforting and maddening, and would be worthy of Hitchcock if that master of suspense had produced westerns.
Two aspects of why I rate this poorly first the version I bought (for 99 cents!) is riddled with annoying typos and distorted words throughout. Of course, for the price one’s expectations shouldn’t be too high. Second, the writing is tedious, overly descriptive. The story is basically boring. This is my first..and last read of the fabled Zane Grey.
This is a story of a young man who shoots his brother in a gun fight near a gold mining town in the southwest. He flees the town into the desert lands as a gold minor and outdoorsman. During his ventures for the next fourteen years he explore numerous deserts including the Mohave and Dearh Valley. He meets an elderly minor who teaches him the ways of the wastelands and becomes becomes his mentor. He helps several people while exporing the deserts but can never make a commitment to anyone for fear he will be caught and hanged for his brother's death. After wandering the deserts for fourteen years he decides to return to the town he fled to accept his punishment.
I give the novel itself three stars. Now, to talk about the two editions I ended up buying Both of the books depicted in the pictures are currently priced the same on . Each is $0.99. The one that says "Classic Bestseller" on the cover and is published by Aegitas was edited well and is a good buy. However, the other one was edited horribly, if at all, and is a terrible buy if you want to able to enjoy the book. The publisher evidently was so ashamed of the job done that its name is not given in the book.
Loved this book! The descriptions of the desert and the way it affects people is very accurate and wonderful! Also, the fact that Adam always thought that he was a fugitive from justice and that he needed to go back and take is punishment is heartbreaking! These thoughts were always in his mind and he thought he could never have the life he so desperately wanted. At the very end, he finds out that his brother is not dead, he is not a wanted man and even though the sheriff is always looking for someone to hang, it is not him! This is a great relief to Adam and he finds out that he is not wanted for murder after all!
Have to admit to being a Zane Grey dedicated fan; so this book's flaws - as described in other reviews - will not be repeated here. Yes, there were some tedious parts, but his description of Death Valley and its nearby environs is right on and accurate. And in this case, perhaps more than in any of his other works Grey meticulously developed the main character with his flaws and strengths. This book really consisted of about three stories in one, and I think that helped to keep my interest. I thought Grey's three female lead characters were fascinating, well-developed and intriguing within the rough and tumble world of the western landscape. The somewhat surprising ending was a bit predictable and did not have the shocking impact that Grey may have thought it would. Highly recommend this American classic.
